Bedroom recessed lighting: gentle, even, and off the pillow

Bedrooms share the living room’s soft 10–20 foot-candle target, with one extra rule: nobody wants a downlight aimed at their face at 6 a.m.

Quick answer

A typical 14′ × 12′ bedroom with a 9′ ceiling needs 4 six-inch LED downlights in a 2 × 2 grid; a large 16′ × 14′ room needs about 6. Keep fixtures over walking and dressing areas, not centered above the pillow line.

Bedside reading is a job for sconces or lamps you can reach from the pillow — not the ceiling grid. Plan the grid for the room; plan reading light for the bed.

Computed with a 1,200-lumen six-inch LED (60° beam) using the IES lumen method — the same engine as the calculator.

Route the grid around the bed

Lay the grid out for even coverage, then check where the bed goes. A fixture directly over the pillow zone reads as an interrogation lamp when you lie down. Shifting the grid so fixtures land at the foot of the bed and over dressing areas costs almost nothing in evenness — the custom mode in the calculator and the grid designer both let you verify the shift.

Closets deserve their own fixture: one small 4-inch can, centered, transforms a reach-in; walk-ins want one per 25 square feet or so. Check the fixture’s rating for enclosed spaces.

Warm and dim wins at night

Choose 2700–3000K color temperature for bedrooms — the catalog lists it per fixture — and put the whole room on a dimmer. If you like reading light from the ceiling, a pair of narrow-beam gimbal fixtures aimed at each side of the headboard works, wired to their own switches so one sleeper’s light isn’t both sleepers’ light.

Bedroom questions
Should I put a recessed light over the bed?

Directly over the pillow, no — it shines into lying-down eyes. Over the foot of the bed or flanking it is fine. If you want ceiling-based reading light, use two small aimed fixtures on separate switches.

How many recessed lights in a 12×12 bedroom?

Four six-inch LEDs in a 2 × 2 grid gets a 12′ × 12′ bedroom to about 15 foot-candles — the middle of the recommended 10–20 fc band. Add lamps for bedside tasks.

What color temperature is best for bedroom recessed lights?

2700K–3000K (warm white). Cooler temperatures (4000K+) read as alertness — great in a workshop, unwelcome at bedtime. Every fixture in the database lists its color temperature and CRI.
